Eeim-III is based on a poignant final poem by Norwegian writer Tor Jonsson. The music hovers between brightness and darkness, with humming as a gentle counterpoint to the text’s gravity.
The trio version of «Eeim» is based on my solo work originally composed in 2006 for voice to a text by Tor Jonsson. This new trio version, premiered in Germany in 2023, expands and recomposes the original material, opening it into a chamber dialogue.
Jonsson’s text is taken from the final poem he wrote before ending his life. The music circles around this fragment, attempting to rise with the melodic line toward brightness, yet continually drawn back into darkness. The singer alternates between sung text and wordless humming, the latter offering a thread of comfort and intimacy—set in poignant contrast to the weight of the words.
The text of the work is presented here in Norwegian, English, and German versions:
No bryt mi einsemd mot si ytste grense
Mitt liv var draum utan dagklår visse
Difor eig eg ikkje jorda meir
Men livet vil eg aldri, aldri misse
English translation: Nina Nielsen
Now my solitude breaks against its utmost perimeter
My life was dream without clarity of day
Therefore, I no longer possess the earth
But life I will not ever miss
